Hazel woods are found quite widely along the Western seabord of the British Isles, and in a few places it forms a distinct habitat with lush green stands of dwarf woodland that are rich in biodiversity – the ‘Celtic rainforest’.
In this well produced and superbly illustrated book, the authors make a convincing case for treating these remnant woodlands with a lot more attention than hitherto. Atlantic hazel woodland provides one of oldest environmental habitats in Britain, and one that is rich in unusual species, especially lichens, mosses and liverworts as well as some uncommon fungi, including the curious H. rhododendrei (hazel gloves) which seems to occur only in this habitat. The book also includes chapters on the management of atlantic hazel and an appendix which provides a schedule for site assessment.
