Cypripedium or hardy slipper orchids are one of the most popular groups of orchids, and their 100 or more hybrids are particularly easy to grow.

Author Biography

Werner Frosch is the leading breeder of Cypripedium hybrids. Based in Germany, he has travelled widely to see Cypripedium species in the wild in China and the USA. Most hybrids available in trade were raised by Werner. Phillip Cribb is a leading specialist on the taxonomy and conservation of orchids. He was Deputy Keeper of the Herbarium and Curator of the Orchid Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, until his retirement in 2006. Phillip prepared the first modern monograph on Cypripedium in 1989 (Kew Publishing), and has seen nearly all of the species in their natural habitats over a period of over 30 years. He also has a passionate interest in the conservation of the species. Co-author of many publications including Guide to the Flowers of Western China (Kew Publishing, 2011), Growing Hardy Orchids (Kew Publishing, 2011), and The Genus Cymbidium (Kew Publishing, 2011).
