This handsomely illustrated book is another in a series of natural history publications from National Museums Northern Ireland (NMNI). It represents a major contribution to the understanding of plant distribution in one of Ireland’s largest counties.
The Systematic Section catalogues all vascular plants that occur or have occurred in Co Tyrone. For the rarest plants, specific sites are listed. Distribution maps accompany many of the species accounts.
While the Systematic Section lies at the heart of the Flora, there are many ancillary chapters such as:
• The Topography and Botany of Co Tyrone
• History of Botanical Recording in Co Tyrone.
Ian McNeill’s work is complemented by two important chapters by guest writers:
• The Climate of Co Tyrone by Nicholas Betts
• The Geology of Co Tyrone by Philip Doughty.
The book includes notes on the meanings and pronunciation of Tyrone place-names, accompanying an extensive Gazetteer giving grid references for places named in the text. There is also a comprehensive Bibliography.
Many photographs of flowers enliven the text. The chapter entitled ‘Habitat Gallery’ is one of the highlights of the book, the many photographs in this section illustrating the beauty of the Tyrone landscape. Most of the photographs in the book are the work of Robert Thompson, whose expertise in the field of wildlife photography has already earned acclaim in previous publications by NMNI.
