A fine illustrated monograph providing an overview of the distribution of 159 species of orchids of France, co-published by the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), and Biotope. It was coordinated by Dusak F. and Prat D. with multiple contributors and photographers
it includes more than 420,000 pieces of data.

The introductory sections of the book detail the background to the project biogeography and implications of the data for orchid management. For each taxon, there are two photographs, one a close up and the other a full size specimen in the field. On the opposite page is detailed fullpage A4 map. Each entry shows the overall distribution, ecology and the national red list ranking according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Atlas provides background information to set protection priorities and actions to be taken for species classified as endangered (EN) or Vulnerable (VU), such as Lady’s Slipper, the fen orchid and Ophrys of the Aveyron.

This Atlas provides an important tool for assessing biodiversity in France. It provides insight into the difficulties of conserving these orchids and their habitats and to understanding the threats facing them: some species are primarily or solely located in France, which gives them a special heritage value.
