Nowadays, herbs and spices can easily bought in shops and supermarkets, but the growing of herbs and spices is an absorbing and rewarding hobby, and has the added bonus of providing a delicious aroma and taste to all culinary dishes. This book begins with a brief history of herbs and spices: how they have changed the course of history in many countries, especially in Asia and Africa; and how they have been used by people the world over far back in recorded history as medicines, for cosmetics and perfumes, and probably before that in drinks and food. The book then goes ont to show how easy it is to grow herbs and spices naturally, that is, without the use of harmful chemicals. It gives information on basic organic gardening procedures, followed by a list of almost all herbs and spices which can be grown successfully in practically any part of the world, in large or small gardens, and even just in pots or on patios. Illustrated with original colour photographs and illuminations, the book also gives information on how to best preserve and dry both herbs and spices. Patricia Carter is the author of “Illuminated Calligraphy” and “Illuminated Alphabets”.

Author Biography

Charlotte de la Bedoyere was fascinated by the idea of natural gardening at a very early age. She has a large flourishing vegetable garden at her Sussex home, where she grows dozens of varieties of herbs, plus many topical varieties, and she also keeps ponies, ducks, geese, chickens, and sheep. Her forty acres of woodland were recently named as a site of nature-conservation interest, having been found to contain 250 different species of plants. When not gardening, she loves to travel the world studying exotic flora and fauna.
