An inspirational and beautifully illustrated book that tells the stories of 80 plants from around the globe. In his follow-up to the bestselling Around the World in 80 Trees, Jonathan Drori takes another trip across the globe, bringing to life the science of plants by revealing how their worlds are intricately entwined with our own history, culture and folklore.

From the eerie mandrake to Spanish ‘moss’ of Louisiana, each of these stories is full of surprises. Some have a troubling past, while others have ignited human creativity or enabled whole civilizations to flourish. With a colourful cast of characters all brought to life by illustrator Lucille Clerc, Around the World in 80 Plants takes you on a botanical journey of beauty and brilliance.

“Each plant comes alive with wit and affection. It’s a sparkling compendium of fascinating insights into the endlessly diverse world of plants. I learned so much reading this book – it is a box of treasures.” Richard Deverell, Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

‘Full of wonder and delight, a perfect companion to Around the World in 80 Trees.’ Bill Bryson, Author ~‘This is a delightful book that informs and charms in equal measure. It is full of shafts of knowledge that give fresh insight into our relationship with plants from around the world. It is also very hand-somely illustrated.’ Monty Don, Author and Broadcaster ~‘I have always believed the three Ps – Plants, People and Places – offered an unending source of stories worth the telling and this book proves the point. Like a curious but discerning alchemist, the author has distilled a wealth of information concerning the examples chosen, which are an eclectic mix of both well-known and lesser-known plants. The author’s light touch in explaining scientific facts makes the text easier reading for the uninitiated and his sense of humour had me chuckling at times without lessening the underlying conservation message on the role and importance of plants in the survival of ourselves and our planet.’ Roy Lancaster, Plantsman, Gardener, Author and Broadcaster
