Red leather gilt ruled prize binding with gilt crest to front and rear boards, 5 spine bands and gilt titles on black(?) leather labels; attractive gilt tooling to outer edges of the boards and the inside borders, purple endpapers, all edges gilt (AEG). Gilt edging spectacularly bright. Spine lightly faded, bumped and slightly worn. Internally in Fine condition: exceptionally crisp, clean and bright throughout, very light use only; no foxing or age toning. Includes 5 colour map plates at rear, 2 of which folding, as issued, all in Fine condition. Attractive Gladstone Memorial Prize plate dated 1912 to front pastedown from University of London to Milton Briggs, possibly the same Milton Briggs who wrote 2 notable economics books in the following decades. Chief points of interest for each country lie in the areas of natural history, inhabitants (both native and settlers), relics of prehistoric civilisation, economic resources, industrial and commercial development prospects and the conditions of political life. James Bryce, later Viscount Bryce, was a professor of civil law and jurisprudence, noted historian, Member of Parliament, Ambassador to the United States and regular traveller, becoming influential in many areas, though not to be confused with the author of the same name who was responsible for the Flora of Arran.
