Original cloth boards. Early professional repair to spine with gilt title. The book is free of foxing and is very sound and tight. Black endpapers. 17 lithographed plates of which two hand coloured geological maps and two hand coloured geological profiles.
The author, John Phillips, 1800 to 1874, geologist, assisted in the foundation of the Oxford Museum of Natural History. He was president of the Geological Society of London, published the first global geologic time scale, and made astronomical observations of Mars. This was his last book.
With fine illustrations of fossils, including many molluscs, echinoderms, etc. The geological map and some profiles are coloured.
