Author Biography

Andrew Dalby is a historian and linguist. Languages in his repertoire include Sanskrit, Pali, French, Latin, Greek, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, German, and Burmese. He is the author of several books, including The Classical Cookbook (1996), Dangerous Tastes: the Story of Spices (2000), Language in Danger: The Loss of Linguistic Diversity and the Threat to Our Future (2003) and Bacchus: A Biography (2003). He studied classics and linguistics at St John's College, Cambridge, and gained a PhD from London University. Annette Giesecke, PhD, is a specialist in the history, meaning, and representation of ancient gardens and designed landscapes at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. She is General Editor of the six volume A Cultural History of Plants (Bloomsbury 2022) and editor of Volume 1 (Antiquity) and co-editor of Volume 3 (Early Modern). Her other works include Classical Mythology A to Z (2020) and The Mythology of Plants (2014). She is General Editor of the six volume A Cultural History of Nature (Bloomsbury, forthcoming).
