Dr Nicky Buller has been the laboratory supervisor of the bacteriology laboratory at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in Perth, Western Australia for over 30 years. Bacteria from terrestrial and aquatic animals are identified using phenotypic identification (conventional biochemical methods and MALDI-TOF), and molecular methods (PCR and sequencing). Dr Buller has trained scientists in aquatic bacteriology methods from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Vietnam and French Polynesia and has given workshops on aquatic bacteria identification methods to students, including overseas students, at Curtin University as part of a Post Graduate degree in aquaculture management. Dr Buller is also author or co-author of 43 journal articles, 7 Australian and New Zealand Standard Diagnostic Procedures and many papers at conferences. She has been Principal or Co-investigator on 11 research projects investigating terrestrial and aquatic animal diseases, including supervision of PhD, Masters or Honours students. She is a reviewer for 16 journals and holds an adjunct position with Murdoch University.
