There are 122 species of sedges in France. These species occupy a very wide variety of environments from alpine grasslands to coastal sands, passing through limestone hillsides, forest environments, peat bogs and wetlands. Due to their well-marked ecological requirements, certain sedges are very useful for the characterization of plant communities (indicator species for phytosociologists). These plants, which easily go unnoticed by the non-specialist, are known to be difficult to identify.

This book, intended as a field guide, deals with all of these 122 species of sedge found in France and offers botanists new tools to get to know them better, including illustrated identification keys, tables of morphological criteria to distinguish close species, detailed monographs with a distribution map ( with levels of abundance by department), numerous photographs, and a plate illustrated by two renowned botanist illustrators (Robert Portal and Juan Luis Castillo).
