Four volumes bound as two. Half bound in green leather with green textured boards, 5 spine bands with gilt titles on red leather label, marbled textblock edges, cream endpapers; hinges cracked though bindings remain solid, front joint starting on vol. 3/4, rubbed and bumped all round with wear to extremities, some light staining to boards, small loss to top of spine of vol. 3/4 and spine label of vol. 1/2. Internally only occasional light foxing, light age-toning, well thumbed though relatively crisp and bright for age. Vol 1/2 comprises vol. 1: viii, 312pp., 8 colour plates; and vol. 2: viii, 320pp, 12 colour plates. Vol 3/4 comprises Vol. 3: viii, 312pp., 10 colour plates; and Vol. 4: viii, 312pp, 10 colour plates. Colour plates tend to be a little thumbed, some more so, and a few tears. Overall Good-. Photos available on request. A scare complete set with 40 colour plates as issued. Thomas Rymer Jones was the author of several popular books on zoology. The translation by Jones comes from the bird section of Tierleben (Animal Life) by Brehm, which was one of the first modern popular zoological treatises, first published in German as a six volume work that was completed in 1869 and includes 40 colour plates and over 400 stunning B&W illustrations, some of which full page and all indexed, by Robert Kretschmer.
