Bryozoans can be found in most marine habitats. There are at least 4000 species presently known around the world, with the true total probably much higher than this.
This Synopsis covers the 36 species of the order Stenolaemata which occur in British waters. It is complete in itself and includes sections devoted to general bryozoan structure, the classification of Bryozoa and a key to the higher taxa.
This Synopsis is part of a series of four devoted to the Bryozoa. For other groups of bryozoans, see Synopsis 10: Cheilostomatous Bryozoa 1 (Aeteoidea – Cribrillinoidea), Synopsis 14: Cheilostomatous Bryozoa 2 (Hippothooidea – Celleporoidea) and Synopsis 33: Ctenostome bryozoans
