This volume is designed to help determine, with relatively simple means, the pileate (i.e. having a pileus of cap) polypores of Central Europe. Numerous colour illustrations help the reader to identify fungi with fruiting bodies, having pores or tubes, that live on woody substrates. Since the determination of species requires some experience, the detailed colour photos help even those with little experience. The first section covers the morphology and anatomy of polypores, the second section deals with individual species. Interesting facts about the distribution, notes on use, or explanations of unusual names such as tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius, Zunderschwamm in German), agarikon (Laricifomes officinalis, Apothekerschwamm in German), Pflaumenbaumporling (a species growing on prune trees) or crab-of-the-woods (Laetiporus sulphureus, Schwefelporling in German) are interwoven in the species descriptions.
Given its coverage of all European species, this guide will be helpful to practitioners, ecologists and conservationists working with polypores.
