Author Biography

Markku Saastamoinen, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, graduated at the University of Helsinki in Animal Science (animal nutrition and animal genetics). He published his doctorial thesis on ‘Genetic and Environmental Parameter for Measures of Racing Performance in Standardbred and Finnhorse Trotters’ at the University of Helsinki. Markku is currently working as a senior scientist in Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) on several topics related to horses and horse production, and as a lecturer in equine nutrition and management at the University of Helsinki. He has published scientific and popular publications on equine nutrition, genetics, management, exercise physiology, and equine economy, and edited textbooks on equine nutrition. He has held several national and European positions in scientific and horse organizations and committees and has been president of the Equine Workshop on Equine Nutrition (EWEN) as well as a secretary and vice president of the Horse Commission ofthe European Association of Animal Science (EAAP).
