Properly built, functional fences are essential for land management. Their main use in conservation is to protect newly planted or regenerating woodlands and coppices from browsing animals. Fences are also essential to permit grazing of pastures, downland, heaths and other semi-natural areas. A good fence will look neat, do the job, and last for many years. A badly built fence will cause constant problems. This handbook gives comprehensive information on all aspects of fence construction, including strained wire and post and rail fencing. The construction of stiles and gates is also described in detail.
