1st edition. Book Condition: Poor.
The fairly scarce 1st edition. The textblock itself is crisp with some age toning and some, mostly very light, spotting throughout, however it has become detached from the binding, leaving the binding with the endpapers and the first and final leaf (the half-title page and the single sheet of publisher’s adverts). The grey cloth binding itself, with gilt spine titles and spine decoration and black titles and floral decoration to cover, is only very lightly worn at the extremities, with soot tanning to the spine, though the gilt remains bright. Interesting bookplate dated 1892 to front pastedown of the distinguished Eleonora Armitage, with an inscription by her to the FFEP dated 1896. The bryologist Eleanora Armitage (1865-1961) was a founding member of the Moss Exchange Club, the British Ecological Society and the British Bryological Society, as well as a member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science as well as the Royal Horticultural Society. She was an accomplished collector and her herbarium is now held at Bristol Museum.
