The flora contains about 1500 species, including all native as well as a small selection of cultivated species.
Rhodes has one of the richest floristic regions in the Mediterranean, where species form both the western and eastern Mediterranean meet. A team of 18 authors has extensively studied the flora of the islands during almost 20 years and found many new species. In this, the first of two volumes of the flora, over 750 taxa are presented with detailed descriptions and distribution data and two new taxa are described. Volume 1 covers all the ferns, fern allies, conifers and some of the angiosperm families (dicots) from A through to F. Plant families have been arranged alphabetically.
Bilingual English and German keys facilitate determination, together with colour photos of nearly all species that have been made in recent years, mostly in Rhodes, as well as line drawings. Numerous illustrations of the most important habitats complement the flora.
