Over the past two decades, the author has developed and refined an extremely useful simulation model of forest growth. The JABOWA model was the first successful application of digital computer simulation to a complex natural ecosystem. Effects of global warming, acid rain, and commercial forest harvesting practices have been analysed with this model. Offering a fresh perspective on ecological phenomena, Forest Dynamics provides all the information necessary to understand and use the model. Written for students and professionals in forestry and ecology and the ecological issues that confront society in the management of forests. It also explains the theoretical foundations of the model.

I strongly recommend this stimulating book to all tropical ecologists who are thinking seriously about the problems of sampling the tropical forest and building models of its growth, structure and processes. There is much to be learnt from Botkin's analysis of the temperate forest which should enable sensible and realistic advances in the tropics. * D. McC. Newbery, University of Stirling, Journal of Tropical Ecology, 10(4) 1994 * The book specifically aims to be a technical manual for those wishing to make use of the JABOWA-II model: it achieves this goal. The book is thorough in its presentation of the development of the model from its first publication in 1972 through to the early nineties. The book is well written ... likely to be useful for ecologists or foresters involved in detailed forest ecosystem modelling research. In summary, it is a book for the specialist. * M.J. Spilsbury, Journal of Biogeography (1994) 21 * The book is well crafted with a sound logical structure. The author provides a well-balanced discussion regarding the processes of model validation and verification where models are often complex and data sets limited. I believe that the author provides sufficient information, in a clear fashion, to enable readers to draw their own conclusions. * M.F. Proe, Forestry, Vol. 68, No. 1, 1995 * This is a very technical book that can be read in a general sense to gain an appreciation for the application of models in science and natural resource issues... * BOTSLIANA, The Organisation for Tropical Studies Newsletter. *
