    About 275 chickens are slaughtered in the United States, every second of every day, seven days a week. There can be tens of thousands of chickens inside any one warehouse. Selectively bred to grow fast, they can barely walk, and their unnaturally short, miserable lives are spent lying on their own faeces, panting in the burning, ammonia-laden air. And they aren’t fed corn or grain – they and other factory-farmed animals in America are fed largely on soya, which is grown on vast monocultures in the tropics, usually where forests have been cut down.
