Monkey Puzzle Man is a satisfyingly comprehensive account of the life of Archibald Menzies, a Scot who travelled the world as a surgeon naturalist in the Royal Navy. Amongst other notable contributions, Menzies pioneered the documentation of plants of the Pacific Northwest of America, following the epic journey of HMS Discovery in the early 1790’s discovering many plants which now adourn British and continental gardens. Menzies is also the only man to have pocketed his dessert at a foreign banquet, which subsequently resulted in the introduction of one of the most curious trees to Britain’s parks and estates.
