Madre de Dios – ‘Mother of God’ – is a place where the Andean Cloud Forest intermingles with the steaming tropical jungle at the head of the Amazon river. Here can be found the greatest proliferation of living species that has ever existed on Earth, ever. And it is a place which is now under grave threat. Paul Rosolie has travelled to the very heart of this wilderness in search of rare flora and fauna. His adventures – with giant anacondas, huge cayman, the mighty jaguar and one very small anteater – are by turn thrilling, terrifying and revelatory. Paul crosses some of the world’s harshest terrain and encounters some of its most extreme weather conditions. He battles with life-threatening tropical diseases and the extreme mental challenges presented by being alone in the heart of the jungle. Mother of God is an astonishing tale of adventure and survival, set in one of the world’s few remaining truly wild places. It’s a story of nature, red in tooth and claw, and how we must both respect its awesome power and protect its extraordinary glory.

"Rosolie delivers an old-fashioned jungle adventure, one with rare immediacy and depth of feeling for the people and creatures he encounters" Wall Street Journal "Paul Rosolie's solo adventures in the heart of the Amazon jungle, up close and personal with giant anacondas and jaguars, are gripping. And his dedication to preserving one of the earth's last wildernesses is where he really sets himself apart. Mother of God is an awe-inspiring read." -- Bear Grylls "An extraordinary book ... gripping, sometimes disturbing and always satisfying. There are parts that will haunt you, scenes you will never forget." Jane Goodall "A gripping adventure story filled with plenty of adrenaline-filled encounters. A vividly written narrative of an amazingly diverse world still to be explored." Kirkus Reviews "This is old-school nature writing, unabashedly romantic and free of alienation... Rosolie's powers of description are so vivid and engrossing that readers will be swept along in his passion." Publishers Weekly

Author Biography

Paul Rosolie is a naturalist and explorer who has specialized in the western Amazon for nearly a decade. Along with running a conservation project called Tamandua Expeditions that uses tourism to support rainforest conservation, Paul's work has taken him to some of the last dark places on the map. He has traveled with poachers into deep jungle to document the black market trade in endangered species (the third largest black market globally, after guns and drugs), he has learned from indigenous trackers about the Amazon's flora and fauna, and has explored a previously undocumented ecosystem that has come to be called the 'floating forest'. Paul has worked on conservation projects in tropical ecosystems all over the world. This is his first book.
