‘Dark, wet rock hung above the  path, no more than a narrow shelf clinging to steep walls before  sliding into oblivion. The mist shifted, hinting at the plunging  fall to the corrie far below, and I moved with measured care. One step to pass the arête: a perfect moment of weightless movement as the mountains held their breath. And then on and up, into thinning cloud to find the ridge above’ Northern Horizons is the story of one runner’s lifelong love affair with the mountains of Scotland and Cumbria. It is also a guidebook, and therefore an invitation to join a growing community that finds both solace and thrill in moving fleet-footed through the hills. Will Herman has spent much of his life exploring and piecing together some of the finest journeys among high plateaux, bladed ridges, sweeping slabs, towering pinnacles – and the myriad landscapes connecting them. Here, his experiences are revealed in a collection of deeply personal and evocative accounts, accompanied by route descriptions and sublime imagery that captures their exquisite beauty.

Author Biography

Resident in Lancashire, Will Herman grew up in West Cumbria, forging an early connection with the fells which remain home from home. Among Will’s earliest memories, however, are countless days spent among the Scottish hills, where he was introduced to the mountains of Sutherland, Coigach, Assynt and Torridon, walking, scrambling and running whenever the opportunity allowed.  Climbing and sea kayaking distracted Will for many years, during which time he completed classic climbs at home and abroad, from the sea stacks and cliffs of Shetland and North-West Scotland to the granite walls of Bregaglia in Switzerland. Fulfilling a long-held ambition to explore the Highlands and Islands by kayak, he has circumnavigated all the major Scottish islands and completed many other challenging trips, including rounding Cape Wrath and Whiten Head, and crossing the Minch from Uig on Skye to North Uist. However, he was inextricably drawn back to the purity of running in the mountains. A passion for writing and photography led to the publication of numerous articles in adventure sports titles such as Sidetracked magazine, Ocean Paddler and Canoe & Kayak UK, and his images have featured in a wide range of publications including guidebooks, historical narratives and celebrated titles such as The Great Sea Cliffs of Scotland by Guy Robertson. Will is also a regular contributor of race photography to The Fell Runner, published by the Fell Runners Association, and the organiser of a new Lakeland fell race. A member of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, Will completed the Bob Graham Round in 2019 before turning his attention once again to Scotland and a new project, gathering his experiences from a lifetime among the hills and on the sea to produce Northern Horizons in partnership with Scottish Mountaineering Press.
