This title shows you how to individualize your roof terrace through the clever use of decorative elements, ranging from flooring and boundaries to lighting effects, water features, ornaments and sculpture. Roof terrace and balcony designs provide inspiration and guidance with plans, practical advice and plant lists. Case studies include a terrace for entertaining, a living space for all the family, an area of relaxation and contemplation, and a richly planted urban roof garden. Roof terraces and balconies are oases in an urban landscape. As a viewing platform, a theatrical setting or a place of retreat, the roof garden fulfils many needs in the city. This book celebrates the elevated garden, showing there is little to beat the rooftop for experiencing an exhilarating sense of space and light, and enjoying the view. Illustrated with over 300 photographs of sky-high locations, from England to New York to New Zealand, the book offers a range of styles, and themes: formal and informal designs, spaces for entertaining, modern showcases and contemplative spaces. With advice on boundaries, surfaces, decoration, lighting and planting, this book shows how to transform a rooftop space.

"* 'Some city-dwellers think that making a roof garden is an easy short-cut to heaven on earth (or at least just above it). In reality roof gardens are a pretty specialized form of garden design, and the conditions for plants are as tough as they come. Here at last is a book that will help you to make one successfully.' Stephen Anderton, The Times gardener"
