When was the last time you stopped to listen to the song of a robin? Or take a moment to pause and inhale the sweet scent of a flower? How often do you feel a profound emotional connection to nature’s beauty? From ancient times, through to the Romantic poets and beyond, we have been aware of the healing power of nature. Moments with nature provide inner calm and happiness. This is a truth that we intuitively understand, and yet it is one we often fail to explore in our busy, technology-driven lives. In The Blackbird’s Song, Professor Miles Richardson offers a month-by-month guide to activities that anyone can do to better connect with the natural world, along with the related science showing how nature can impact on our health – make us smarter, lower our blood pressure, reduce anxiety and balance our hormones. It’s an important, inspiring book which encourages us all to embrace new paths and experiences, including what we can do to look after Mother nature, as she looks after us.
