An eight-year survey of roof in East Anglia, augmented by records from other parts of the British Isles and an extensive perusal of old county Floras, has amassed records of 168 species of vascular plants in this man-made habitat. Roofs and roof gutters are treated separately, and particular attention is also paid to thatched roofs and to pillboxes surviving from the Second World War. The term “tecticolous” is coined to denote plans growing in these habitats.
