Fungi of Northern Europe, Volume 1: The Genus Hygrocybe
The Genus Hygrocybe, Fungi of Northern Europe, Volume 1 is the best identification guide for waxcap fungi in Europe. This revised second edition includes updated keys, descriptions and illustrations of all 62 species and varieties recognized within the region. A few new combinations are proposed and many new pictures have been added.
The introduction includes a taxonomic description of Hygrocybe covering both the macroscopic and microscopic features. The habitats of hygrocybe, their roles in those ecosystems, and their importance as indicators of grassland habitat quality are also discussed.
62 species and varieties of waxcap are featured and each has a comprehensive description, notes on ecology and distribution and discussion of potential lookalikes. Illustrations include high quality colour photographs, a distribution map, and drawings of spores.
Waxcaps continue to suffer from serious decline in many parts of northern Europe due to loss of unimproved grassland habitat and It is hoped that the book will continue to be a strong tool in helping conservation efforts within the region.
This is the English language version of the book. A Danish version can also be purchased:
