Half-bound in dark burgundy leather with 5 spine bands and gilt spine titles; red marbled boards and matching endpapers; gilt top edge of the textblock. Binging solid; light wear to the top of the spine and the corners; spine moderately faded to a mid brown. Internally immaculate: very crisp, clean and bright. Overall Very Good. A very attractive and exceptionally clean copy of the 6th edition, which was retitled omitting the word ‘On’, to indicate that it is the definitive explanation of the origin of the species. It also uses the word ‘evolution’ for this first time and contains all of Darwin’s amendments before his death in 1882, including his thorough response to the 1872 criticism of Mivart.
