The landscape of Lochaber has rightly been celebrated in terms of superlatives. We have the highest mountain in Britain, the longest glen, the deepest loch, the most westerly point on the mainland. The coastline, including that of the Small Isles and sea lochs, is as long and complex as anywhere in the British Isles. The underlying geology is of such importance and diversity that the whole of Lochaber has been designated a Geopark.
It is 17 years since Living Lochaber – The Lochaber Biodiversity Action Plan was published. Within this document the status and threats to the wildlife of Lochaber were highlighted. In a step towards revisiting the current state of local biodiversity, this is a compilation of a series of articles, first published in Lochaber Life, which highlights the amazing diversity of animals and plants that live on our doorstep. Each article showcases a group of related habitats that support these species.
