The principal effort of this work has been to provide a practical text for those interested in the venomous and poisonous marine animals, be they student, teacher researcher, public health worker, food scientist, fisherman, medic or just the general reader. The authors provide background and history on which readers can develop a research programme or lecture, or provide data of significance to the public. The text is arranged by phyla, describing those poisonous or venomous genera and species that are of primary interest with respect to their contact with mankind, or the toxicological importance of their tissues. A brief consideration of the clinical significance of the poisoning that can be precipitated by these animals is also provided, not only for those working with these marine animals but for public health workers or physicians who may be called upon to treat poisoned victims.
